What is the World Test Championship?

The ICC World Test Championship (WTC) is the premier international competition for Test cricket. Launched in 2019, the WTC was introduced to add context and structure to bilateral Test series. Unlike standalone series of the past, the WTC creates a league format with points, rankings, and a grand final, making every Test match more meaningful.

The ongoing WTC 2025–27 marks the fourth cycle of this elite tournament, featuring the top nine Test-playing nations competing over two years for a place in the final.

📊 How the WTC Format Works

🏆 Tournament Format

• 9 teams compete in the WTC cycle (2025–27)
• Each team plays 6 series (3 at home, 3 away)
• Each series can have 2–5 Tests
• Not all teams face each other due to the limited series

📈 Points System

• Win: 12 points
• Tie: 6 points
• Draw: 4 points
• Loss: 0 points

Points are awarded per match, and teams are ranked based on Percentage of Points (PCT) to adjust for unequal number of matches.

🎯 Reaching the Final

The top 2 teams on the WTC standings table at the end of the league stage will qualify for the WTC Final in mid-2027.

📅 WTC 2025–27: Schedule & Key Series

The WTC 2025–27 features 71 scheduled Test matches across 27 bilateral series. Each of the nine teams will face six different opponents.

Some of the high-profile series include:
