PCT stands for Percentage of Points — it determines a team’s position in the WTC standings. It reflects how much of the total available points a team has earned, expressed as a percentage.

Why is PCT used?
Because teams don’t play the same number of matches or opponents, the ICC uses PCT as the fairest way to rank teams in the WTC table.

✅ Official PCT Formula (WTC 2025–27):
PCT = [(Points for Wins/Draws/Ties) − (Over-rate Penalty Points)] ÷ [12 × Number of Tests Played] × 100

WTC Points System:
Each WTC match has a maximum of 12 points at stake:

  • Win – 12 points
  • Draw – 4 points
  • Tie – 6 points
  • Loss – 0 points
  • 1 point deducted per over short of the minimum rate

Over Rate Penalty in World Test Championship
What is an Over Rate?
Teams must bowl a minimum number of overs per hour in a Test match. This is called the minimum over rate.

What if a team bowls too slowly?
If a team falls short of the required over rate, they are penalized under ICC regulations.

How the Penalty Works:
  • For every over short, the team gets 1 Penalty Over.
  • Each Penalty Over results in 1 WTC point deduction.
Example:
If a team is 3 overs short of the required over rate in a match:
  • They are charged with 3 Penalty Overs
  • They lose 3 WTC points from their total

Example PCT Calculation with Official Method:
A team plays 5 matches and earns:

  • 3 wins (3 × 12 = 36)
  • 1 draw (1 × 4 = 4)
  • 1 loss = 0
  • Total earned = 40 points
  • Penalty: 3 over-rate points deducted
  • Final Points = 37
Total Available Points = 5 × 12 = 60
PCT = (37 ÷ 60) × 100 = 61.67%

Note: Matches canceled due to Acceptable Non-Compliance (as per ICC rules) are not included in the calculation.

Does Past Performance Matter?
No. Each WTC cycle is independent. Past cycle points or standings (e.g., WTC 2021–23) do not influence the PCT or rankings in WTC 2025–27.

Tie-Breaker Rules in WTC 2025–27 (Simplified):
As per ICC, If two or more teams have the same PCT, the following tie-breakers apply in this order:

  1. Team with more series wins during the WTC cycle
  2. Higher Away Points Percentage (only away Tests considered and same formula apply to calculate PCT)
  3. Higher ICC Men’s Test Team Ranking as of 30 April 2027
